The Cost of Photography

A lot of people have been asking me how  much I paid for my Nikon D90 and all the accessories that I’ve got for it.  I usually just say around…$1200 cause I haven’t calculated the entire cost.  I’ve been curious lately and I guess I’ll take this time and calculate all the costs.  To be honest, I haven’t been keeping track at all.

  • I first purchased a GGS LCD Screen Protector priced at $8.49 including shipping for the Nikon D90 on ebay from seller hermeshine cause I didn’t want to have that white plastic cover on it.  Bought sometime January.
    • rigid and made of optical glass material; makes lcd screen clear
    • only 0.5mm thick with 6 layers of coatings and UV protection
    • prevents scratches, collisions, and moderate impact to LCD screen.
  • In between those dates I bought a Matin Neoprene Elastic Strap for around $10.99 – $15.90 somewhere on ebay. It’s pretty legit. Gotta love this strap.
  • Then I bought a Nikon 67mm Neutral Color NC Filter for $35.00 + $16.00 Shipping for a total of $51.00 on January 28, 2009 from ebayer seller mightyphoto. that was the cheapest price I could find on ebay at the time.
  • I bought my Fastpack 250 from Seller prodigital2000 on ebay for $65.00. Too bad it looks like he raised his prices up a couple of dollars. They now sell for  $71.96 with free shipping on his seller store on March 9, 2009.
  • A couple days later, I purchased a backup rechargeable battery (Genuine Nikon EN-EL3e) for the Nikon D90 from ebayer The Camera Box for $38.95 including shipping on March 12, 2009.
  • I then purchased my Nikon D90 + 18 – 105 Lens + 8GB Kit from Seller time2envy on ebay for $1,119.99 on ebay on April 2, 2009.

I guess that I got a lot out of this auction for spending that much.  So it wasn’t that bad.  A lot of other sellers on ebay were selling the kit without all that other stuff.  Sucks for those bidders who won those.  Some of these items were pretty much garbage like the Padded Carrying Case.  But the Deluxe Hard Carrying Case is pretty durable.  the SLR Slave Flash is pretty lame but it’s cool that it came with the 67mm filter.  That makes up for everything already.  The lens cap keeper is a strap that you place on the barrel of the lens and the lens’ cap.  It’s pretty useful if you don’t want to keep the cap in your pocket or risk it being lost.

  • I recently purchased an SB-400 Nikon Flash system for $119.00 including shipping from RitzCamera.com on July 20, 2009.
  • I also purchased a Sto-Fen Omni Bounce Diffuser for it on ebay from user northcoastcamera for $16.75 including shipping the same day.

So Lets add that all together.  Together we get a whopping total of $1435.08. It is a lot of money.  But at the same time, I bought these things at different time intervals; I didn’t buy them all at once.  I also checked ebay repeatedly to find the best deals on items from respected sellers in the ebay community.

A big shout out goes to my friends who helped feed me for my second year of college.  I couldn’t have bought these things without you supplying food. You know who you all are. haha

This is my all time favorite shot so far.
